Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggghhhhh!
For the first time Pirate Paul will share his secrets with our customers. After 30 years of fishing South Florida, he has become known as one of the most knowledgeable people fishing these waters.
This is Pirate Paul here after a good weekend in the keys catching yellowtail. We all know that the water is now warm and ideal for catching yellowtail. There are now plenty of schools up and down the keys now. From the picture below you can see what a great day we had. We had a tremendous run of yellowtail and after limiting out in tails right as the moon went down the mangrove snappers began to bight with sizes ranging between 2 ½ to 5 ½ lbs
All you need is a couple of blocks of chum, some silversides and flat line with some small # 2 hooks and light line. WIth this setup you are guaranteed to catch em up. You will have to adjust your depth according to the current (in other words if there is no current in 55 feet of water move deeper and if there’s to much current move a little shallower.) Anchor the boat and setup your chum bag on the stern. Throw out a handful of silver sides. Then set up one line with a silverside hooked through the head. Allow the silverside to flatline with the bale open and let the current take it as it begins to descend. Do not put another line in the water utnil you have hooked your first tail. Once you have caught one reel the yellow tail and now you can put several lines in and let the fun begin as you quickly meet your limit. Be sure to leave one yellowtail on a heavy line and weight it so that it will go to the bottom and now you are fishing live bait for grouper which would make your good day GREAT!!!!
With this setup you are guaranteed to catch em up. Remember to always keep one of those little live yellowtails on the bottom on the big rod as there are still groupers around.
