Do you need a license to drive a boat in Florida? If you were born before 1988, the answer is no. There isn't a mandatory sailing license. Even if you were born after 1987, the answer is still no—though you are required to complete a boating education course from the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) or an equivalent. You must also carry a boating education ID as proof of passing the course or equivalent exam, as well as a valid photo identification.
Restrictions on Age
If you're a teenager, do you need a license to drive a boat in Florida? The requirement to pass a boating education course is the main age-based qualification for taking a vehicle out on the waves in Florida. This requirement applies to both boat drivers and anyone who wants to drive a PWC.
Also, drivers must be at least 14 years old to drive or operate a PWC in Florida. There is a check in place to help with this, as only adults 18 and older can rent personal watercraft.
What Are the Boating Education Requirements in Florida?
To legally operate a boat or watercraft in Florida, both residents and non-residents must complete a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course. Alternatively, they must complete an equivalent course or test out of it. Even vacationers must pass a temporary certificate exam.
