Jet skiing is an exciting adventure. But if you plan on spending a hot day out on the waves at fast speeds, it's important to wear the right jet ski clothing that's comfortable, offers protection, and doesn't get in the way of a fun day. The Jet Ski of Miami team loves spending time out on the waves, and we want to make sure each of our clients has a great time on their new jet ski. So read through some of our team's top suggestions for what to wear jet skiing, and swing by for even more helpful jet skiing tips.

Safety First!

When you're choosing your jet ski clothing, opt for swimwear. You want clothing made to get wet (especially if you're out on the ocean). It's also important that it's not too tight for easy movement or so loose it might get caught on something. These quick safety tips about what to wear while jet skiing apply to every rider:

  • Choose quick-dry materials that won't give you a rash or irritate your skin.
  • Wear eye protection, even if you're moving at low speeds.
  • Keep long hair tied back in a bun.
  • Wear a life jacket. While this tip applies to everyone, younger and new riders especially need life jackets.
  • Wear the cord that attaches to the start-stop switch of your PWC. If this is attached to your vest or wrist, the PWC will stop if you fall off instead of driving away.

Protection From the Sun

When you're spending time out in the sun, sun protection is critical. This can be:

  • Sunscreen: Choose the highest possible SPF, and reapply it every two hours — or more frequently if you've gotten wet.
  • Sun protective clothing: Many outdoor and recreational clothing has a sun protection rating. Breathable long-sleeve shirts rated for protecting skin can help you enjoy a fun day out on the water without as many pauses to reapply sunscreen.
  • Sunglasses: While eye protection mostly protects your eyes from the water, sun glare is also a problem. Sunglasses protect your eyes and help you stay vigilant on the water.
  • Shade: Bring an umbrella or tent when taking a break from the waves. A shady break can keep you safe — it also helps cool the sand so you don't burn your bare feet!

Having the Right Gear

You may already have some makeshift gear at home—swim shorts, long-sleeved shirts, sunglasses, etc. But it's important to have the right types of gear. If you know you'll be spending a lot of time out on the waves, invest in jet ski clothing that's quick-drying, sun-protective, and comfortable. Also, opt for water-resistant accessories (like sunglasses, hats, and phone cases) that stop your stuff from being damaged.

Water Shoes

Water shoes are quick-drying shoes that drain easily while still letting you walk comfortably on hot sand or gravelly beaches. When you're spending the day out on a lake or at the beach, you're not going to spend all day either on dry land or in the water. So shoes you can wear in both environments to protect the bottom of your feet and your toes are crucial.
